The National Flag
Barbados National Flag
The Barbados National Flag, officially adopted on November 30, 1966, symbolizes the island’s independence and heritage. It was designed by Grantley Prescod and features three vertical bands: two outer bands of ultramarine blue and a golden band in the center.
At the heart of the flag is a broken trident, a significant emblem of the nation. The trident’s three prongs represent the three principles of democracy: government of, for, and by the people. The broken shaft symbolizes Barbados’ break from colonial rule and its journey to independence.
The colors of the flag also carry deep meaning:
- Ultramarine Blue represents the surrounding sea and sky.
- Golden Yellow symbolizes the island’s sandy beaches and the warmth of its people.
The flag is a powerful expression of Barbados’ sovereignty, natural beauty, and enduring democratic spirit.
